Geography

Intent

Geography helps children understand the world around them and build curiosity about places, people, and natural environments. At St Mary’s Catholic Primary, we focus on developing geographical knowledge and skills through a clear intent: to help pupils observe, ask questions, and make connections between local and global locations. This approach supports confidence in using maps, recognising physical and human features, and describing what they see with growing accuracy.

Implementation

Our curriculum is designed with careful implementation, ensuring that learning is progressive from year group to year group. Pupils explore topics such as the UK’s regions, weather and climate, rivers and coasts, and how communities use land. Teachers use age-appropriate resources, practical activities, and opportunities to develop vocabulary, so children can apply what they learn in meaningful ways. Fieldwork, where possible, and classroom investigations help pupils practise key geographical skills and deepen understanding.

Impact

The impact of this geography provision is seen in pupils’ engagement, improved geographical understanding, and stronger communication about the world. Children learn to interpret maps and data, compare places, and consider how people and environments influence one another. By building these skills alongside a respectful and responsible attitude, our geography curriculum supports children in becoming thoughtful learners and informed citizens who can explain their learning clearly to families and others.
