Welcome to Year 1

Welcome to Year 1 at St Mary's Catholic Primary School 

Our class teacher is Miss Roberts, and our support staff are Mrs Newing and Miss Baldwin. 

We are delighted to welcome you and your child to Year 1! In Year 1, children develop their skills in reading, writing and mathematics, while growing in confidence, curiosity and kindness through our continuous provision and foundation subjects. 

PE days

PE takes place on Mondays and Wednesdays. 

Phonics and Reading

We use the Little Wandle programme daily to support early reading and phonics. Children practise their sounds, blending and sentence writing. 

Little Wandle books will be sent home on a Friday. Children will also bring home a sharing book to enjoy together. We encourage children to read 5-10 minutes each day. Please ensure reading books and the reading log are brought into school every day. 

Mathematics 

We follow the NCETM programme with a strong focus on number skills.

You can support your child at home by practising: 

Counting in 1s, 2s, 5s and 10s to 100

Number bonds to 10 and then 20. Such as: 1+9=10, 9+1=10, 10-1=9, 10-9=1
